We left The South
We travelled North
Dark of night turned into dawn
And we were very far from home
But we were home all the same
The army left the garrison
Empty pubs and empty homes
And we were moving into one -
Southern strangers, as yet unknown
A house on The Oval
The new brat in town
And we are all living in an ex-military wife's house now

Me & my sister
My sister and her brother
When we were children, we looked after each other
Where was our father? And why was our mother crying?
He was at work and she thought that he was lying
Me & my sister
My sister and her brother
We slept in the same room and we would sing to each other
The comfort of songs we loved when we could hear mum & dad at war
I still have trouble sleeping
I have no-one to sing to me
Me & my sister
My sister and her mother got into a fight
And no longer speak to each other
All parents can testify that children are spiteful creatures
And some of them even grown up and become teachers

The night was orange
And white
And black
You fell in the hole - he pulled you back out again
I was a boy and he was a man
There's something to be said for the height that you stand
And the length of your arm
And the strength of your hand
When you fell in the hole, he pulled you back out again.

Half way through the afternoon
To some old new town - holy ground - we followed you
It's a long old road
Sing me into a solemn hole
So long
So low
You can't stay young this whole life
It's hard to love someone - no-one is so set in stone
Now I am all alone
